Hi All, Well, we’ve been in Tokyo for over three months, and this is my first official email newsletter. It took me a minute, but I’m back! To start, we absolutely love it here. It’s so different from home, in all the best ways. Every day is jammed with new things to see, find, taste, hear, figure out, and learn. It’s like being a beginner again at daily life, which feels good. I’m also feeling some guilt about not writing this note sooner. I’ve been proud of my unbroken streak of 39 newsletters in 39 months — always delivered at noon on the 15th. But something has kept me from writing since arriving here. Maybe it’s the sheer volume of new experiences and ideas which seems impossible to relay in a concise email, or the sheer volume of other creative people that also travel to and write about Japan. What can I say about Japan that hasn’t already been said? I’ve tried to record some (meandering) videos with thoughts about my experience of this place on the IG, but even those feel inadequate. One unique thing I can share is that I’m having an opening here in Tokyo featuring my new Mokuhanga work. The show will also feature paintings by local artist and good friend David Cady. These new prints are super challenging to make, but when I don’t screw them up, I really love them, and the process is still fun. I’m looking forward to sharing them at the opening: Genten (Origin)
