Oh, hi. I started taking pictures in high school, over 30 years ago. But I didn’t start “making” pictures until about a decade later. That was an important creative step for me, going from observing and capturing what I’d see, to coming up with the concept for an image and gathering the elements I needed to bring it into existence. In addition to the distinct difference between “taking” and “making”, there are infinite ways to go about expressing an idea, from the tools and media used, to the way it’s produced, presented, shared and discussed. With so many possible pathways, how does one move forward through this maze of options, and continue to make resonant work, while also making a living? My instinct tells me that it’s some magic combination of honesty, work, and chance. And since we can’t control chance, that really just leaves honesty and work. But unpacking those two words leads to so many possible places, so many layers. I’m always thinking about how to continue down this path — how to choose the right route, move at the right pace, and make the right work. Thanks for reading, Jamie
