Hallo,

One of the joys of turning 50 is that your eyesight goes to shit. At least that’s what the optometrist says. So this year, I’ll be giving a 50th birthday present to my eyes: a new pair of glasses with progressive lenses.

Another one of the joys of turning 50 is that if you use your hands a lot, they can get arthritic. Or so I’m told by my doc. So this year, I’ll also be giving a present to my hands: a new etching press from Conrad Machine Works. It’s safe to say that I’m more excited about the press than I am about the glasses.

There’s a dark irony here. I’ve made my entire career using my eyes and my hands, and now they are breaking down, at a time when I feel like I need them more than ever. There is so much left to do, and I have more clarity than ever, but time seems to be accelerating.

“As you get older, the questions come down to about two or three. How long? And what do I do with the time I've got left?”  - David Bowie

Jamie

P.S. I’ve created a JK Journal archive with all posts to date, and a place to sign up. If you know anyone that might appreciate these monthly entries, please pass them along.

Seen / Heard / Felt

The soothing, mesmerizing work of Rogier van der Zwaag, a Dutch artist that plays with perspective, light, and simple forms. I especially love his Nothing Stands series. His Instagram videos are pretty great too. (Thanks, Kate).

Alpine Modern // No. 05 (Archive sale)

From the Gorner Glacier in Zermatt, Switzerland. I photographed this while I was traveling around Europe in a VW camper with a Hasselblad 501 and a big box of film. This triptych has a white wood frame and OP3 instead of the usual aluminum. It has traveled around a bit, so there is some normal wear on the moulding, thus the lower price.

32 x 120 in Triptych
