Hi. Every few weeks I connect with a friend in LA to talk about art, and what we’re working on. Recently, I was telling him about the prints I have been making in my studio where I’m exploring ideas such as military strategy, Kamikazes, 9/11, Masahisa Fukase’s seminal book Ravens, and fall foliage. “So they’re all about death,” he said, not really asking me as much as telling me. Each Wednesday, I take time to observe what I’m thinking about and feeling, then make a print in response to that. Apparently, I’ve been thinking about death. A lot. Maybe turning 50 does that. But I believe that my curiosity around death is less around fear of dying, and more about wanting to understand it so that I can live better. I didn’t know Jesse Aratow, but my friends did. He was here a few weeks ago, and now he’s gone. He was 48. It’s heartbreaking. As my favorite bumper sticker says, “YOU ARE GOING TO DIE.” A pretty straightforward reminder for all of us.
