Hi. A guy named Beeple just sold an NFT for $69 million, and Kaws is arguably the most popular living artist in the world. Which has me thinking about what art is, and what it means to me. After doing some thinking and writing and discussing with some artist friends, I still don’t have a clear answer. This is where I’m at right now: Art is something that challenges and expands my thinking. The paintings, photographs, songs, or films that I enjoy most are the works that make me look, listen, feel, and think in a new way. The best art transports me to an entirely new place. This journey can be uncomfortable, but it’s always exhilarating. Which makes me wonder — where does art stop? Is a beautiful sunrise “art”? What about graphic design or advertising or carpentry or making sandwiches? What makes Beeple and Kaws any different from Warhol and Koons?
