Hi.

Spring is by far my favorite time of the year, when the cold and dark make way for warmth and light. I love walking down our street, seeing the new leaf buds and little flowers.

It’s also an excellent time to be high in the mountains, when the avalanche danger recedes as the snowpack stabilizes. The backcountry has been very tricky this winter. Unusually weak snow layers have made the high alpine an especially dangerous place to spend time, so I’ve been missing the mountains and the solitude and inspiration they provide. 

I’m looking forward to getting out more in the next few months, taking advantage of the longer days and safer conditions, and making more art in and about the mountains.

Marina Abramovic’s Walk Through Walls. And from 2012, The Artist is Present. I didn’t know much about Abramovic before reading this book, but loved reading about her commitment to her work, and really to just being fully present and alive.

I particularly loved her approach to teaching: “For the first three months, I place each student at a table with a thousand pieces of white paper and a trash can underneath. Every day they have to sit at the table for several hours and write ideas. They put the ideas they like on the right side of the table; the ones they don’t like, they put in the trash. But we don’t throw out the trash. After three months, I only take the ideas from the trash can. I don’t even look at the ideas they liked. Because the trash can is a treasure trove of things they’re afraid to do.”
